All Music-Lovers Welcome!

Music has played an important role in my life for as long as I can remember. Playing music, singing, listening to albums/CDs/MP3s, attending lots and lots of's all good! I have nowhere to discuss it and am kind of tired of posting things to my facebook page (where I'm sure most of my friends are tired of seeing all my ramblings, too!). So...that lead me here. Who knows if anyone will see this and read it. I suppose I should have titled the blog "Just You and Me...Talking About Music Again" because it would be a lot more fun for me if other people talk about music with me! I love to get recommendations for great tunes...all genres. Please know, though...I'm not a fan of country music. You can still suggest songs for me to listen to and I promise to try 'em out but can't promise I'll like them if they're country! :) So, please join about music...

Beck and The White Stripes...

Said I'd be back to tell you my favorites from these two groups:

The White Stripes:
Seven Nation Army
Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground

Think I'm in Love
Devil's Haircut
Where It's At

Give any of those a listen on youtube and you should be happy!

Voodoo child - Orianthi live in KL 4/8/2010

If you're not sure if you know who Orianthi is but you've seen Michael Jackson's movie "This is It" then you know her...she was playing lead guitar for his band on his final tour and is shown many times in the film. She's actually pretty incredible. Here she is doing a cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Child." I think even Jimi would like her.

Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros - Home - Official Video

Well, here's an example of a group whom I don't really love but I tolerate this song. It's way too countrified for my tastes. But, our fav terrestrial radio station plays it (several times a day) and Munchkin loves it (and I love the sentiment in the lyrics). In fact, we were just coming home from the healthfood store and she was humming this tune for the final 5 minutes of the ride. honor's "Home" by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes.

Bands/groups/singers whom you don't like yet you like...

Do you know what I mean? There are groups out there whose music is not really my favorite...maybe something about it usually irritates me. But...I sometimes have a handful of songs from the same source which I actually like...a lot. Two rock groups that I feel that way about are The White Stripes and Beck. I'm not what you would call a 'fan' of either, really, but they do both have some good pieces. I'll come back later and tell you which ones in case you're not familiar with them. :)

War - The Cisco Kid - Live 1973 Midnight Special

Caught a PBS special last night on the funk band War. I had forgotten how great they were and how many hits they had! I was trying to fall asleep but kept sitting up and watching more of the show since the songs were old favorites..."Spill the Wine," "Low Rider," "Why Can't We Be Friends." Here's a live version of "The Cisco Kid" from Midnight Special.

Morcheeba - 'Run Honey Run'

This is another cover...the original was from 1967 and I had never heard of it but Morcheeba does this beautiful version...the melody is rather hypnotic and rolling, very pretty song.

She Keeps Bees "Gimmie"

Brooklyn duo Jessica Larrabee and Andy this song. Jessica has a very raw and bluesy voice and the whole sound is very pure. They have a myspace site if you find yourself wanting more.

Angelique Kidjo - Gimme Shelter (feat. Joss Stone)

Here's an interesting combo...Angelique Kidjo and Joss Stone paired up for a cover of the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter"...

Civil Twilight - Letters From The Sky

Another one before my Robitussin with codeine kicks in. :)

Band is from South Africa and they were new to me earlier this year. This song is gorgeous...starts quietly with the simple piano piece then as his voice enters the lights come up slightly...then as the music continues to build we see the drummer/guitarist emerge from the background. This song gave me the chills and made me cry the first time I heard it. Still love it. Listen to the lyrics, too...

The Catalyst - Linkin Park (Official Music Video)

This is the newest video from Linkin Park from their upcoming album to be released in September. I like to share new songs w/my 7 yr old daughter especially since she actually like alt rock a lot and we listen to it together in the car frequently. Well, she has heard this one on the car radio but I can't share the video w/her as I find the creepiness-factor is pretty high! I did read that LP wanted to portray how people might spend their last minutes on earth if they knew the end was near. The end of the song--where the lyrics melt into "Lift me up...let me go...lift me up...let me go..." made me think, though, of my own end-of-life imagery and it was pretty cool. I imagined a person being lifted up towards the sky, resting on the hands of all the people who loved her and then her body turns to dust as the wind blows her away and the hands 'let go' of her. What do you think of this song?

The Black Keys - Tighten Up [OFFICIAL VIDEO]

Lovin' this much more impressive than another band of two who shall remain nameless (until my next post, probably! Ha!). This video is great, too...funny, in a sad kind of way.

Who were your personal favorite bands from the 90s?

My local favorite alt rock radio station is reaching back to the 90s when they grew their roots and they are asking people to name their favs from that decade. Who were you listening to then? What/who did you like the most?

I would have to say most of my favorites revolve around grunge or post-punk (to me) stuff. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots...Green Day, The Offspring. They all rocked...I loved the minor tones in the grunge era...I still love it and listen to a lot of Soundgarden, AIC, and PJ today. Love that all three bands are still putting new stuff out in some form (maybe not an entire CD of new material but *something* new).

In fact, as I type this, AIC/"Rooster" is playing on the radio! :)
